Process of Applying Surface Dressing
Here’s how we apply surface dressing:
- Sub Base Preparation: We start by ensuring the sub base is in good condition, repairing any pot holes or imperfections to create a solid foundation.
- Debris Removal: We remove loose debris like leaves and dust. For larger areas, we use mechanical sweepers to ensure a clean surface, facilitating a strong bond with the bitumen emulsion.
- Bitumen Binder Application: The bitumen binder is applied at the appropriate coverage rate. For large areas like roadways, we use a combination spray bar, while smaller residential driveways or pathways are treated with a hand lance. The bitumen binder is typically applied at a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius.
- Aggregate Application: We apply an aggregate of your choice onto the hot bitumen. This creates a robust surface by bonding with the bitumen. We use a chip spreader for larger areas or apply the aggregate manually with a gritting shovel for smaller spaces.
- Rolling for Longevity: To ensure durability, we roll the aggregate into the binder. This process enhances the bond between the bitumen and aggregate. We utilize a ride-on tandem roller or walk-behind pedestrian roller for this purpose.
We may recommend two coats of tar and stone for certain applications, based on our surveyors’ assessments during the initial survey stage.
